The
village at Anuktuvuk Pass is one of the most remote places in the world.
Inhabited by the Nunamiut Eskimo peoples, they were among the last of
North America’s nomadic people to settle into a permanent village,
beginning in the 1950’s. Located within the boundaries of Gates of the
Arctic National Park, Anuktuvuk Pass has a unique ecosystem where
glacially carved mountains rise 4,000 feet above the tundra valley. The
pass is a major migration route for 450,000 Barren Ground caribou, the
largest caribou herd in the world. In addition to the village, the
community hosts a "not to be missed" museum that offers
exhibits and displays into the origins and history of the Nunamiut
people.
