Located 40 miles
south of Anchorage, Girdwood is one of Alaska’s premier year-round
recreational areas and is the home of Mt. Alyeska. To reach this small
community, drive forty-five minutes south of Anchorage along Turnagain
Arm. The drive itself is breathtaking and is said to be one of the top
ten most scenic highways in the United States. Girdwood lies at the base
of the Chugach Mountains and is famous for its hanging glaciers,
beautiful views, and scenery.
Eleven miles from
Girdwood is the Portage Glacier where the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center
presents a very informative film about glaciers as well as a number of
glacier exhibits.
