26
Glacier Cruise

Enjoy the
4.5-hour 26 Glacier Cruise through some of the most pristine
passageways of Alaska's Prince William Sound. You will travel to the
face of Harvard Glacier at the end of College Fjord, ice permitting
and then to Barry Arm and Harriman Fjord where you will see more
Tidewater glaciers.
Journey back
in time as we guide you along these remote fjords. This 135-mile
tour includes narration on the history of the Chugach Natives,
Athabaskan Indians and others that ventured into the Sound in
centuries past. Listen as the crew explains how the fjords have been
transformed over the past 15,000 years. Learn about the various
types of glaciers along the route and the history of the Harriman
Expedition of 100 years ago that named many of the glaciers.
The Klondike
Express is a 137-foot, high speed catamaran and has a capacity for
342 passengers. The vessel has three decks, two of which are
enclosed and heated. Comfortable upholstered booths with tables are
available for all passengers and the large picture windows provide a
view from every seat.
The
Glaciers
The 26 Glacier
Cruise travels over 135 miles into Prince William Sound where you
will see 26 "named glaciers" and many more unnamed. We get
within 400 to 500 feet from the face of these towering walls of ice
and so you can "hear" the glaciers move as well as see the
brilliant blues in the ice. Glacier calving is normally seen during
each cruise. You will see three types of glaciers on each trip
including Alpine or Hanging, Piedmont and Tidewater glaciers.
About the
Wildlife
You may view
sea otters, seals, porpoises, sea lions and whales on each cruise.
The most common whales in Prince William Sound are Humpback and the
Orca or Killer Whale. Passengers may also spot wildlife on land such
as bear and mountain goats. Of the 200 species of bird life
inhabiting the area, Bald eagles are very prominent. Before
returning to Whittier we visit a bird rookery which is home to
thousands of Kittiwakes.
